China may be the world’s largest market for e-bikes, but Europe is fast catching up. The EU’s official statistics agency says the figure reached the one million e-bike mark two years ago, and sales have sharply increased since then.

Dealers say the elderly are also big customers. Sales of ordinary bicycles fell in Germany last year, but sales of e-bikes rose by eight percent. Sales figures are expected to keep rising. “In five years we will have the market share of 20 percent, maybe more,” said Marcus Kendler, owner of E-Motion. In the hillier parts, that figure has already been beyond it. 
The sales of e-bikes in Germany have been much larger than those in any other country in Europe. But other countries are fast catching up. In Europe, with the various brands at the market and falling prices, e-bikes are here to stay and not just a repeated trend.

July 21st.  2007 was a typical English summer’s day—it rained for 24 hours! As usual, I rushed home from work at midday to check on the house. Nothing was amiss. By the time I left work at 5p.m., however, the road into our village was flooded. Our house had never been flooded but, as I opened the front door, a wave of waters greeted me. Thank God! The kids weren’t with me, because the house was 5 feet deep in water. We lost everything downstairs. And the plaster had to be torn off the wall’s ceilings pulled down.

Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head for a big igloo. Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel, the world’s first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over.
In two weeks’ time Bergqvist’s ice creation(作品)will be nothing more than a pool of water. “We don’t see it as a big problem,” he says. “We just look forward to replacing it.”"
Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so successful that he designed the present one, which measures roughly 200 square meters. Six workmen spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed. “The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front door,” he says.

For one tired out from work, autumn is one of the best times to step into the open air to kick back and enjoy some great music. And that’s what many Beijingers have done this past weekend.

It’s necessary to use different ways to communicate for different purposes. Study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in New York, has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails. 
Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14% of e-mails, 21% of instant messages, 27% of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37% of phone calls.
His results, to be presented at the conferences on human computer interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists.   
Hancock says it is very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mail than on the phone.
People are even more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call. Many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect.”
Hancock hopes his research will help many a company work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, might be best done using e-mail.

It has been a week since gunmen attacked a shopping center in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The attack left more than 70 people dead. The Kenyan Red Cross said Thursday that about 60 others were still missing. The attack left many people feeling powerless and shocked. But instead of hiding at home, Kenyans have come out to donate food, clothing, their own blood and money. The country appears more united because of the attack. The violence at the shopping mall lasted four days. During that time, medical workers offer help to victims and security forces at a nearby community center. A small army of volunteers came to the center. They provided food, medical services and emotional support to an endless line of people. Vimal Shah helped to direct the community center operation. He said so many people wanted to feed Kenyan security forces or help the victims.
